Instruction notice on the use of scaffolding – minimum requirement
Only properly-trained staff may carry out work on scaffolding (Order of Court, 31 Aug 2005).
Scaffold design
- to comply with Euro EN 12811-1 standard. (1 work floor loaded to 100% of the permissible loading and 1% to 50%)
- protection using components that are liable to catch the wind is prohibited, unless stated to the contrary on the scaffolding sign.
- Hoisting onto scaffolding components is permitted only with the written approval of the scaffolding manufacturer.
Walking on scaffolding
- Walking along scaffolding is allowed only if it is fitted with an approved scaffolding sign.
- The user is to make a visual inspection of the complete scaffolding construction.
- Walking along scaffolding will take place only using the access provided. It must be kept clear of obstructions at all times.
- When climbing ladders, no materials are to be carried in the hand, and the ladder will always be taken down at the steps.
- Cage ladders must be always be secured on the inside.
Hazards in adverse weather conditions
- Scaffolding may be used only providing that the weather conditions will not endanger the health and safety of users.
- During high winds or thunderstorms, the contractor must ensure that any nets or tarpaulins are rolled up and/or removed.
Checks of the scaffolding by the user
- After extreme weather conditions.
- When ambient conditions change (excavation work, traffic, etc)
- Where there is a significant increase in loads (beam grid, rubble or similar)
- The user is responsible for maintenance and for any periodic checks.
Changes to the scaffolding construction
- Scaffolding may be altered only by an accredited scaffolder.
- Handrails, side planks and floors must not be placed, nor removed.
Preventing falling objects
- On completion of work, the scaffolding floors must be cleared of all loose materials (rubble, plaster, timber, metal components, etc, by the contractor or user).
Preparing for the removal of scaffolding
- Before the contractor/user begins dismantling the scaffolding, its components must be cleaned up and cleared of all materials, beam grid, grease, oil, paint, plaster and chemicals, etc, and in particular asbestos facings and material.
Use of the scaffolding
- Scaffolding may be used only by personnel who have received training to give them the knowledge and skills required to perform their work when using scaffolding.
- If it is discovered that scaffolding no longer complies with regulations, the scaffolding sign must be taken down, the scaffolding firm must be notified and all work on the scaffolding halted.
